Gillan
The word Gillan, is referred to a Northern Province in Iran. In Arab the
letter ‘G’ or its Urdu equivalent “gayn” (Roman Urdu) does not exist, so
it is substituted in the Arabic Grammer letter of “J” or “Jeem” (Roman
Arabic/Urdu).
Gillan and the arrival of Islam
Gillan is a province of present day Iran, it is located on the North Western
frontier of the Country and it lies alongside the Caspian Sea. Gillan is
located in between the Azarbayejan Province, towards the south it touches
Zanjan province and towards the East is the Mazandaran province.
Gillan is not a new province of Iran, it has long existed and was even part
of the Persian Empire. Around 647 AD, the Muslim Arabs first fought for this land, and later conquered it.
The conquest of Sayyidina Khalid Ibn Walid RA, around 15 years earlier, had captured the Persian Capital Ctesiphon (located in present day Iraq), which the Arabs referred to as Madain. Historians often refer to the Battle of Al-Qadisiyah, as the battle of when the pre-Islami Sassanid Empire fell and came under Islamic Rule. After this, Islam quickly spread throughout the Persian Empire, and soon the people of the Province of Gillan, became Muslims.
Gillan, the land of Sufis and its Imam
The battles of Persia were won by the Mujahids of Islam, the work of spreading Islam was the duty of the Sufis. The old language of Farsi, which was spoken in Persia, is often referred to as the Language of the Sufis. There are many Great Kalaams written in Farsi, such as Masnavi Maulana Rum, written by the Hazrat Sayyidna Jalal’uddin Rumi RA, and the author of Saif Ul Malook, Arif-e-Kari, Sarkar Haji Muhammed Mian Baksh RA, is a great writer of Farsi Kalaams. They were most famous for Saif Ul Malook, the Heavenly Swords and were Unanimously given the title of Rumi e Kashmir.

Hazrat Sayyidina Junayd Baghdadi RA, was born in the Hamdaan Province of Present Day Iran, just South of the Gillan Province. He was the spiritual Master of Hazrat Sayyid Abdul Qadir Gillani RA. Hazrat Sayyid Abdul Qadir Gillani RA is reported to have been born in a small Village of Naif in Gillan, therefore this is added to their blessed title, and commonly now ends as Gillani. It must be noted that sometimes the Persian Word Gillani is replaced with the Arabic equivalent Jillani, however this regardless of the spelling, it is representative of the same place.
Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gillani RA is descendent of the Holy Prophet, Sal lallaho alahi waslam, and from the Household of the Ahle Baith RA. His father Hazrat Abu Saleh Jang Dost RA was a Hassani Sayyid and his blessed mother Hazrat Sayyidina Ummul Khair Fatima RA was a Hussaini Sayyid.
